I first met Phil in my hometown of Mount Isa. I started playing rugby league, and every week Phil would take my gate entry. At the time, I didn’t know much about Phil or his accident, but what I knew was that no matter rain, hail, or shine, he would be standing at the gate with a smile on his face wearing his hat.

It read ‘smile it’s free’.

For someone who had every reason not to smile, it struck me that how we see the world has everything to do with our perspective and nothing to do with our circumstances. I learned a valuable lesson from Phil all those years ago. I’ve tried my best to live by his motto, and I hope you do too.
